Volunteer Mentor Description

Position(s): Ongoing


The Youth Volunteer Mentor will support Ivy Elite's Programming during school and after school, during the 2023-2024 academic year. Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Youth Volunteer Mentor serves as a positive role model and life coach for Elementary, Middle, and High School students in one-on-one and group academic tutoring and mentoring sessions, homework assistance, life building skills, etiquette skills, service to the community, enrichment activities, and personal development. To succeed in this position, one must be committed to professional conduct and a high level work ethic at all times, as well as be willing to contribute to a stable and nurturing atmosphere where our youth thrive.


Competencies

  • Lead and assist participants in daily social, recreational, and academic enrichment activities.
  • Provide academic support to address any unmet educational needs of school age students through homework help, mentoring, academic support, and case work support.

  • Monitor, guide, and redirect youth behavior as needed.

  • Maintain a safe, consistent, and nurturing environment where children thrive.

  • Sincere interest and ability to work with school-aged students.

  • Exhibit dedication to changing lives. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction in content areas in which assigned students can grow socially, intellectually, and physically according to his/her individual needs, ability, and maturity level.
  • Carry out effective behavior management techniques in accordance with Ivy Elite.

  • Center’s behavior management policies and procedures.

  • Recruit students on/off targeted school sites.

  • Maintain and upkeep proper records.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all participant information.

  • Contribute to student retention by encouraging student involvement.

  • Attend and participate in meetings and ongoing training's.

  • Support special events that may occur on weekend or holiday time periods.

  • Maintain ongoing communication as well as positive relationships with students, parents, staff, community members, and organizations.

  • Assist site lead and other leadership staff with all other tasks as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years old with a high school diploma or GED
  • Two years of college coursework preferred; working towards a degree in education, sociology, psychology, social work, or a related field.

  • Previous experience working in a group setting supervising children preferred.

  • Knowledge of mental health and behavioral education, life skills, and social skills.

  • Ability to use Microsoft Office or other office management software.

  • Ability to work in a culturally relevant environment.

  • Sensitivity to underserved youth of all ages.

  • Excellent organization and time management skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with interpersonal skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.

  • Must have a flexible schedule and able to work occasional weekends for special events.

  • Demonstrate good judgement, decision making, and excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Previous experience working in a team environment and comfortable working independently.

  • Energetic and positive attitude. 

  • Passion to help children succeed.

Required licenses or certifications:

 CPR/First Aid

 Driver’s License/Car Insurance
